Tignes Ski Force Winter Tour 2017 Review

Test new 2017/18 skis for free & find your perfect ski partner

featured in Events reviews Author Floss, Updated

For the second year running, the ‘Ski Force Winter Tour' was held at the foot of the Grande Motte glacier in Val Claret last weekend. From 8:30 to 15:15, you could come and ski test 19 brands of 2017/18 skis for free. It was a great and free opportunity for anyone to try out skis before committing to buying a new pair for the winter.

You could test all types of skis, from piste skis through to freeride skis, competition race skis and ski touring skis from all the major brands and find your perfect ski partner. The event was suitable for anyone over 18 years whether a Tignes resident or holiday visitor, and you could sign up for free. Ski pass wasn’t included but a discount was available when you bought your pass online with your Force pass for €29. It was a perfect way to start the winter!

What skis did I test and how did they ski?

The ski brands included in the tour are: Armanda, Atomic, Black Crows, Blizzard, Dahu, Dynastar, Elan, Faction, Head, K2, Line, Nordica, Movement, Salomon, Scott, Rossignol, Völkl, Zag and Kästle. There are women and men ski versions on most models so don’t feel afraid to try them all. In my case, I tested four different sets of skis and I wish I had more time to test others. I just found that a day wasn’t long enough!

My first choice was the Kästle FX95 freeride ski. Having already three sets of Kästle skis in my wardrobe, these did not disappoint. They cut through all different snow types and the edge to edge grip was outstanding for such a wide ski underfoot. My second choice was the Black Crows Camox Birdie female, a freeride ski which was a softer and easier to turn, making it a good all-around freeride ski. I then switched to Elan, which is the brand I used and passed all my ski instructor exams on. I skied the Elan SLX competition ski and had great fun making short turns with confidence and edge grip. My last choice was the Salomon Lab X-Race GS with which I loved creating bigger carving turns with edge grip and stability. What a great ski to finish my testing day!

Useful tips

Wear your ski clothes and don’t forget your ski boots and ski poles. You can leave your own skis safe in the enclosure whilst you are testing other skis. Don’t bring any bags or valuables as you can’t leave them in the enclosure. It’s helpful to know your ski boot length size, which is on the shell of your ski boot, and your binding’s DIN setting so you can tell your fitter the details.
