Tignes Snow Report: 26th December 2013

White Out Boxing Day with Increasing Instability in the Snow Pack

featured in Snow report Author James Fisher, Tignes Video Reporter Updated

Thanks to Henry Schniewind, Val d'Isere local and Off-Piste guide from Alpine Experience and Henry's Avalanche Talks for today's report.

The snow started falling in the Espace Killy last night. This morning we had 10-15 cm in the resort at 1850m. The winds were coming out of a generally westerly direction, some gusting up to 70 km/h, but they settled down a bit by mid morning. However the winds picked up again in the early afternoon.

The lifts were delayed slightly for avalanche control first thing in the morning.

Snow on the mountain was about 30 cm but difficult to judge due to the winds.

We're expecting about another 20cm by tonight.

Evidence of instability in the snowpack continues - like with cracking around our skis. But with some thought and a sensible approach to the off-piste, there's some really nice snow out there that makes for great skiing!

Tomorrow, December 27th, is supposed to be clearer with less wind - have fun, be safe!
