An avalanche in the Toviere sector of Tignes at 10:35 this morning has buried up to 9 people, leaving at least four dead according to Le Dauphine.

Rescue workers were quickly on scene and managed to dig out four people quite quickly.

Two people were recovered at around 12:30 but sadly not able to be saved and since then a further two people have been confirmed dead.

The avalanche is believed to have been around 400 metres wide. Avalanche risk in the Haute Tarentaise region remains at 3/5 - Considerable.

The skiers were identified as a group of French holiday makers and a ski guide. It is believed that there is now no-one else left to find. Reports of there having been 9 people involved in the avalanche were from duplicated information in the ski school list.

Our thoughts are with the families and friends of all those affected.
