Delicious foods and fun finds at the local market in Tignes

The middle of winter is still a great time for an outdoor market – especially in France. If you haven’t been to check out the bi-weekly market in Le Lac yet, I suggest you make it part of your next shopping excursion. It’s full of delicious foods and fun finds.

The market sets up on Route Lavachet between Maison Tignes and the Maison Chevallot bakery every Thursday and Sunday. Open all day, you can stroll along under the awnings and investigate the different products on offer. From fresh fruits and vegetables, to artisanal cheeses to fur hats and selfie-sticks (for taking the perfect selfie on the hill), there is something for everyone at the Tignes market.

If you are visiting for the week, this is a great place to do some souvenir shopping and sample some great local products. For those living in Tignes, it might be a fun idea to switch up your shopping routine. Last week there was even a giant candy stand…

Highlights of the market were definitely the cheeses and saucissons. The Savoie region is very famous for their charcuterie. A Savoyard specialty, one should not leave Tignes without sampling some of this delicious cured meat. The artisans selling these delicious products will let you try different types of sausages and wrap up your selection of meats to bring to your friends and family back home.

Another regional product that you can’t go home without trying is the famous Beaufort cheese. There are many different cheeses to sample at the market, so try not to get too overwhelmed with cheesy goodness. Beaufort is a noble Alpine cheese made exclusively from unpasteurized cow’s milk in the French Alps. These cows graze on the beautiful mountain pastures that surround Tignes, giving the cheese a delicious and unforgettable taste. Some of these cheese wheels, which you can see at the market, weigh up to 58kgs. Wow!

And, if you haven’t had a chance to try these local delicacies at a fondue dinner yet, Tignes has some amazing restaurants that do great fondue. Among these are La Ferme des 3 Capucines in Lavachet or Pignatta in Val Claret. Fondue isn’t served at the market (unfortunately), but after you check out the various vendors, head inside somewhere for a nice hot wine or fondue. You’ve got yourself a great afternoon!

There are lots of great activities and events going on in Tignes this week, so be sure to visit Maison Tignes or one of the sign boards to find out what’s happening each day. On Tuesday and Wednesday from 15h00 to 18h00 you can check out the Jeep Track and let a pro driver take you on a snowy obstacle course (free hot chocolate included!). Improve your mountain safety on Tuesday, with an introduction to avalanche transceiver training with ESF at 17h15 (meet at Tignes Le Lac ESF). Fancy getting some sweet air-time? The Powerade airbag contest is taking place Thursday at 15h00 at the bottom of the Tichot chairlift.

Have fun out there this week!
