Tignes Apres Ski Report: 20th December 2012

Kiwi meets Geordie

It’s mid December, and for the first time this week I was reminded that Christmas is around the corner. The markets are out with their amazing French cheeses and meats. I think my family might miss out on Christmas presents this year, however the local arts and crafts would make perfect gifts for them back home. The festive decorations are now out in full force and I am now excited to embark on my first white Christmas.

Tignes was abuzz this weekend with the news that MTV were in town to film an episode of their British reality show Geordie Shore. They were spotted riding dog sleds, riding miniature horses and in numerous bars around Le Lac and Val Claret. I managed to track the orange-tanned crew down at a couple of bars over the weekend to try my luck at making a TV cameo.

On Saturday night I went to Scotty’s in Lavachet where the Geordie crew were out in full force. The bar was packed and the cameras were out. They kept to themselves a lot and the bodyguards made it very hard to get anywhere close, but the orange skin and crazy hair do’s let me know it was definitely them! The novelty of it all soon wore off however and they were forgotten about pretty quickly. The night itself was great and Scotty’s handled the crowd very well. The bar was doing 2 for 1 cocktails over the whole night, and I would definitely recommend the Super Radical and the Long Island Ice Teas. At €9.50 for two, its not a bad deal to get the party started.

On Sunday, JP and Fairy at SoBar gave me a call to let me know the Geordies were doing a wine tasting in the igloo. I headed along around 4pm to hopefully get a little closer and maybe even have a yarn with them. I was in luck and managed to get up close and personal the crew from Newcastle. They were a lot friendlier than I had expected and I managed to have a good conversation and get some photos with a few of them. It was pretty classic watching them shoot the show and cant wait to see JP sinking great wines, eating amazing food and working his magic on the show when it airs in February. The wine tasting itself looked amazing and will be open to the public in the new year. The igloo is now decked out in fur skins and seats and again is well worth the visit.

On Monday after a day in the waist deep pow, we decided to warm down by heading down to Jacks Bar in Le Lac and having a game of ten pin bowling. I had forgotten how fun it is and also how competitive I can become! It was a great way to kill a couple of hours and at just €7 a game, it’s very affordable. It’s equipped with a great bar and also a few video games to remind you of your childhood. It was a very entertaining night which included a few strikes but not many....

The snow has been falling for four days now and the powder around the resort is up to your knees. With skies forecast to clear later this week, the seasonnaires around the resort are frothing in anticipation of the epic days which hopefully lie ahead. There are a couple of gigs on over the valley in Val d’Isere later this week, so if you have a Espace Killy ski pass it would be well worth making the trip over and seeing A-Skillz at Dicks T Bar.

After my first TV Cameo and a couple of great nights out, I am now ready to put the stockings up and start planning the Christmas menu.

Have a great rest of the week and enjoy the powder days ahead.
