Tignes Apres Ski Report: 3rd January 2013

New Years Eve in Tignes

featured in Nightlife reviews Author Toby Leadbetter, Tignes Reporter Updated

As the food hangover slowly cleared from the smorgasbord we  had for Christmas, Tignes greeted us with a picture perfect Boxing Day. We all managed to drag ourselves out of bed and and clear our heads with a few relaxed runs around the resort. This was the day after Xmas equivalent of grabbing the tennis ball and rolling the arm over for some back yard cricket that we'd normally be doing back home in New Zealand.

As the consistency of this winter continues, we were kept inside on the 27th of December 2012 with yet another heavy snowfall. My girlfriend and I decided to keep the festive season diet up, and headed along to Le Brasero to sample their roast beef. We arrived around 18:00 and had to wait till their kitchen opened at 19:00. We had a drink at their bar and thrashed their free
wifi, sending Christmas photos back home and replying to emails. Once the kitchen opened, it was well worth the wait. It was a roast beef meal a mother would be proud of. A great portion of beef, broccoli, potatoes, peas, Yorkshire pudding and covered in gravy. For €10 it was well worth it and a nice reminder of home comforts. I will be visiting the restaurant at Le Brasero again for sure as the fondue at the table next to us and the fish and chips behind us both looked and smelled incredible. It was a great night out with amazing company.

The next day, Tignes Spirit, TC's and SoBar ran a Jib comp on the area outside their premises. They had set up a little booter, a rail and a barrel bonk. This had riders of all ages, abilities and genders visibly having a great time together. The conditions weren't great, with it snowing quite heavily but it didn't stop a few contestants showing off their skills. Both SoBar and TC's were running great drink deals for the spectators with SoBar also dishing out delicious gourmet hotdogs. I stayed off the alcohol for this event and got amongst a SoBar hot chocolate, which hit the spot. Keiren at Tignes Spirit supplied a number of spot prizes including full tunes, waxes and hoodies to the delight of the contestants. It was a fun afternoon which got a lot of the spectators watching excited for the opening of the resorts terrain parks.

On the 30th the Kiwi flat got swamped with friends from around the world. They had all descended on the French Alps for the free New Years gig, with Martin Solveig headlining. It was held outside the Maison De Tignes, which handled the massive crowd very well. Solveig did not disappoint the rugged up ravers playing an impressive set filled with club bangers and old favorites. There was a little confusion come midnight when there was no countdown, however it was quickly forgotten when the amazing 5 minute long fireworks display kicked off. The gig wrapped up around 03:00, and I can easily say it was the best free concert I have ever been to. I take my beanie off to the local Tignes Mairie for organising such a well run gig with what I could tell no hiccups.

With 2012 now in the past, the New Years resolutions for 2013 are set and the Kiwi flat is slowly emptying out. It was a fantastic festive season, one all of our guests said they would never forget. I have a great feeling about 2013 and Tignes kicked it off in style.
