Tignes Apres Ski Report: 7th February 2013

Fab new coffee shop, 1920's fancy dress and Waitangi Day

It was a real mixed bag this last week. We had great food, managed to find some good coffee, spent a day celebrating a fantastic country and even had some RAIN in Tignes?!?!?! It's been an entertaining week and I have managed to not spend a packet which has definitely helped my cause.

On Wednesday the heavens clouded over and it looked like we were about to get dumped on. We got itchy feet and couldn’t wait for it to clear, so my buddies and I headed into the trees and managed to find some great untouched tree runs down to Le Brevieres and also over in Val d’Isere. The visibility is always 10 times better through the trees, and always less crowded. We did this for a few hours before we turned into tree huggers and then headed to try and find this café in Le Lac which is starting to get a reputation for very good coffees.

Situated on the back street in Le Lac up past The Marmot Arms and right next to the post office, there is a Café named, Café Flo. From the outside it looks like a ski shop, however it's great inside and is well worth a visit. The girls in the Kiwi flat are coffee fanatics, and have been searching for a good fix all over the resort. When they stumbled across this gem they were quick to inform us all.

The menu is filled with mouth watering food and I for one am hopeless at resisting a latte and what looked to be atop class hot dog. The hotdog was made with love - a hollowed out baguette with Mayo, tonnes of cheese, fiery mustard and your choice of sauces. The girls were right about the coffee which was by far the best I have had in the resort to date. Johnny went for one of the “Andy Warhol” themed Panini’s and also a bloody good looking smoothie. All in all it is a great find by the girls, and Café Flo will definitely be getting more service from me.

On Thursday, it started to rain unbelievably, ruining the snow from the day before. Luckily that night SoBar were holding a 1920’s themed dress up party. The bow ties were out, the Mo’s were curled and the jazz was on. The costumes looked fantastic, with most people having a decent crack. JP and Fairy definitely looked the part and got the bar transformed into something that came straight out of 1920’s Brooklyn. There was a great turn out and everyone got right into it. It was packed right up until closing with a few after parties being thrown around. The night didn’t wrap up until the early morning, with a few sore heads floating around. We will most definitely be at the next So.Bar dress up party.

The day that us Kiwis had been waiting for all week finally arrived. On Saturday we celebrated Waitangi day, a public holiday back home, and for Kiwis overseas a great excuse for a leer up and celebration. We started the day with a good fry up of bacon, eggs, mushrooms and beer. We invited our Aussie mates back over to return the favour from the weekend before. As everyone’s wallets were pretty empty we just held the day at our place and filled it with competitions, drinking games and cutting shapes. We managed to skype some mates back home and have a couple of drinks with them too. All and all it was a messy day that was great fun. Just feel a little sorry for the neighbours.

Another week down in Tignes and we are already into February. We are now past the half way point in the season and looking back it has been an absolute cracker so far.

With more events in the pipeline we only have more things to look forward to.

Bring on the second half of the winter!
