Tignes Snow Report: 2nd April 2012

Changing Conditions. Rain and snow on the horizon

featured in Snow report Author Debbie Priestley, Tignes Reporter Updated

Today was blisteringly hot, again, and if you want an example of why sun-cream is essential here, well I’m it. I forgot to apply the blessed cream today and I now look like a strawberry. After constantly reminding everyone else to apply said cream I do now feel a little silly!

Anyway, we are set to see a change in the weather tomorrow. The clouds were beginning to appear on the horizon this afternoon, and are blocking out the start tonight, but tomorrow Meteo France is predicting thunder and lightning come the afternoon! The forecasts are a little varied though so we shall work through them.

Snow forecast is predicting rain at resort level from tomorrow till the weekend, and snow from mid level to the top, which will be very well received in town (well, except the rain!). The temperature is due to drop on Sunday meaning that we might get a little snow down in town, but if it is on a very wet base, it won’t come too much. The temperatures are due to be fairly mild, with a low of around minus ten only at the top for most of the week. The wind speed isn’t due to get above fifteen kilometres per hour which is also a bonus, as the wind chill factor shouldn’t drop below minus fifteen.

Meteo France is predicting light snow tomorrow morning, and in the afternoon, as I mentioned, thunder and lightning. Then light snow again the morning after (Thursday) followed by more lightening in the afternoon. Rain on Friday, cloud on Saturday, and then, I’m afraid to report, more rain, continuing until next Wednesday. Mild temperatures are also predicted which doesn’t bode so well for the snow.

The final forecast I will relay is from Meteo Blue, and they’re somewhere in between the two. For tomorrow, light snow, and then a mix of rain and snow on Thursday. This is then followed by more rain, snow on Sunday and sunshine on Monday. The mild temperatures are definitely the common theme this week. So take your pick, but whichever forecast you choose to put your faith in, it looks like we will be getting some snow and rain over the next week. AN umbrella might be a useful piece of kit when walking around town!

The sunshine may be disappearing, but some fresh snow will be most welcome here in Espace Killy, even if it is only at the top! Wet weather will mean the free buses are the best way to get around town, but also that they will be very crowded, especially as it is Easter this week.

Easter week here means that there are a lot of families in town, so the bars tend to be quieter, but also that the slopes and ski schools are a bit busier. To avoid the ski schools, you best bet is to go high quickly, and to ride in places like Le Fornet in Val d’Isere, or the Grande Motte in Tignes. These should also be the better places to find fresh snow as they are higher up!

As it looks like Easter is going to be wet, make sure you bring waterproofs to town with you, and that your ski wear has been waterproofed recently, especially if you are a snowboarder and spend a lot of time sitting down.

If you’re looking for Easter eggs in the ski resorts, then the bakeries are probably your best bet. Although a little pricier than your average Cadbury’s egg, they will probably by handcrafted, and pretty special!

Enjoy the fresh Easter snow, even if it is a bit wet down below.

Bon Ski!!!
