The FIRST snow of 2015!
On the 20th November Tignes went from totally green to totally white over night! We are talking feet not inches here in Tignes! - With so much snow so quickly, the glacier lifts stayed iced shut for 3 days.
So instead of skiing I playing in the snow with my little boy, sledging and building snow men and then skinned up Palafour with friends to enjoy the new powder snow.
After the weekend the lifts slowly started to open again and The Grand Motte cable car eventually got moving to carry skiers and boarders right to the top at 11:30. I was on the first ride up as the ice from the cable crashed down on top of the cable car roof.
The sun was shining bright, but it was super freezing cold at -25c, you can see the all the machinery is frozen over in the picture.
I was so excited to get skiing the new powder and after I pulled my head back out of the snow and readjusted my skiing to the powder setting, The fresh turns from the top felt so good. I looped around 3500 T-Bar several times with no queues, the snow was variable and bumpy and required a series of linked recoveries to make it down in balance.
A little tired out by the deep bumpy snow, I skied down to the lower piste of Rosolin where the piste was perfectly groomed and I could crank my skies over gently on the soft responsive snow. The next day things were running much smoother allowing us to get in a whole day of skiing in the soft snow.
However the soft snow caused problems for racers needing to train slalom and giant slalom, the soft snow makes big dangerous ruts in the snow after just a few runs in a race course. One racer even got helicoptered off to hospital with a suspected broken femur. Wishing him a speedy full recovery.
Today the glacier is shut again with another huge dump of snow falling last night, Tignes is a complete white out! Everybody here is looking forward to the whole resort opening in just a few days.
Wishing everyone a great winter of snow and fun!
